IL PROGETTO

Watermarks nasce come un intervento artistico site-specific pensato per gli spazi storici di Villa Pisani, con l’intento di instaurare attraverso la creazione tessile un dialogo sensibile tra la dimensione fluida dell’acqua e gli spazi monumentali della villa settecentesca, affacciata sul naviglio del Brenta, da secoli elemento centrale del paesaggio e della storia del territorio.
La collezione Watermarks è l’esito di un processo di nove mesi di lavoro, durante il quale circa 700 metri di tessuto sono stati attraversati da oltre 50.000 metri di filo, generando più di 15.000 metri di cuciture. Questa trama di fili costituisce una vera e propria architettura tessile: un sistema organico di tensioni e connessioni che sostiene le forme come uno scheletro invisibile.
Le opere emergono così come creature nate da un lento processo di metamorfosi della materia, in cui il gesto del cucire diventa un atto di costruzione, memoria e trasformazione. L’intervento contemporaneo è proposto come una presenza discreta capace di amplificare la dimensione evocativa degli ambienti della Villa.
Le creature tessili della collezione Watermarks si inseriscono negli spazi come apparizioni silenziose, creando relazioni visive e simboliche con l’architettura, la decorazione pittorica e la luce naturale delle sale. L’intento è di sviluppare un intervento temporaneo armonico e sostenibile, capace di integrarsi con la vita culturale della Villa e di contribuire alla sua valorizzazione come luogo aperto al dialogo tra patrimonio storico e creatività contemporanea.

THE PROJECT‍ ‍

Watermarks was conceived as a site-specific artistic intervention designed for the historic spaces of Villa Pisani, with the aim of establishing, through textile creation, a
sensitive dialogue between the fluid dimension of water and the monumental spaces of the 18th-century villa, overlooking the Brenta Canal, a central feature of the local landscape and history for centuries. The Watermarks collection is the result of a nine-month process, during which approximately 700 meters of fabric were woven with over 50,000 meters of thread, generating more than 15,000 meters of stitching. This web of threads constitutes a veritable textile architecture: an organic system of tensions and connections that supports the forms like an invisible skeleton. The works thus emerge as creatures born from a slow process of metamorphosis of the material, in which the act of sewing becomes an act of construction, memory, and transformation. The contemporary intervention is presented as a discreet presence capable of amplifying the evocative dimension of the Villa's spaces. The textile creatures from the Watermarks collection blend into the spaces like silent apparitions, creating visual and symbolic relationships with the architecture, pictorial decoration, and natural light of the rooms. The aim is to develop a harmonious and sustainable temporary intervention, capable of integrating with the Villa's cultural life and contributing to its valorization as a place open to dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary creativity.

LE SCULTURE TESSILI

Le opere della collezione Watermarks sono sculture tessili indossabili, concepite come creature acquatiche. Esse sono il frutto della ricerca sulla trasformazione del tessuto in organismo vivente che caratterizza la produzione dell’artista napoletana Donna Carmela Santoro.
I costumi vengono realizzati senza disegni né cartamodelli, costruiti direttamente sul manichino attraverso un processo intuitivo e materico. I tessuti utilizzati comprendono materiali sia pregiati sia di recupero, trasformati e riportati a nuova vita attraverso tecniche di decostruzione e ricomposizione.
Il processo creativo si sviluppa attraverso una fitta trama di cuciture visibili, che modificano la consistenza e la struttura del tessuto. Le cuciture diventano parte integrante della forma e del ritmo della superficie, generano tensioni, rilievi e ondulazioni da cui emergono forme organiche che evocano i movimenti e le morfologie dell’acqua.
Queste opere nascono per essere abitate dal corpo umano: nel momento in cui vengono indossate entrano in uno stato di trasformazione, modificando volume, ritmo e presenza nello spazio. Le creature di Watermarks sono quindi forme in continuo divenire, sospese tra scultura, costume e performance

TEXTILE SCULPTURES

The works in the Watermarks collection are wearable textile sculptures conceived as aquatic creatures. They are the result of research into the transformation of fabric into a living organism that characterizes the work of Neapolitan artist Donna Carmela Santoro. The costumes are made without drawings or patterns, constructed directly on the mannequin through an intuitive and material process. The fabrics used include both high-quality and recycled materials, transformed and brought to new life through deconstruction and recomposition techniques. The acreative process unfolds through a dense network of visible stitches, which modify the texture and structure of the fabric. The stitching becomes an integral part of the shape and rhythm of the surface, generating tension, relief, and undulations from which emerge organic forms that evoke the movements and morphologies of water. These works are designed to be inhabited by the human body: the moment they are worn, they enter a state of transformation, altering their volume, rhythm, and presence in space. The creatures of Watermarks are therefore constantly evolving forms, suspended between sculpture, costume, and performance.
